Eat, Pray, Love: My review.

15 Aug
On Friday night I saw Eat, Pray, Love.
I read the book this summer and really thought it was a brilliant story.  In fact, I would consider it “life changing” book and a must read for all women.  Why you may ask?  In the book, the main character, Liz, goes on a journey through three countries – Italy, India and Bali – essentially to “find” herself after divorcing her husband and realizing that she just wasn’t seeing the world for all it’s beauty and treasure.  Now this may sound a little corny, but the story isn’t all that serious.  There was a lot of humor thrown in there and I found myself laughing out loud at times.  The main reason why I particularly liked this book  was because  it told the story of a journey that I feel many women dream about yet are too afraid to really go through with.  Therefore, it is a book that you could really get lost in and live vicariously through.
Now the movie.  There was obviously a lot of hype because the book was such a succes and Julia Roberts.
What more do I need to say?
I really think that if she didn’t play the role of Liz Gilbert I would have disliked this movie without question.  But she added extra appeal that wouldn’t have been there otherwise.  I realize that it is difficult for a movie to go through everything that a book does, but it just felt like the movie was lacking alot.  There were a lot of details left out and even some of the plot was changed.  I also didn’t like how the book does a lot of narrating and explaining through Liz’s voice and although there was some reflecting, I expected there to be more times where she was going through the motions and you heard her speaking to herself.  I thought that there were a lot of times during the book that were funny because she was thinking all these things but the movie lacked a lot of her thoughts.  Most importantly, I felt that the movie didn’t inspire me as much as the book did.  After finishing the book I felt like I wanted to get out there and do something.  As Julia says in the movie, “I want to go somewhere where I can marvel at something”.  And although I would like to say that I felt like that after watching Eat, Pray, Love I left feeling empty handed.
Moral of the story?  Read the book!  It is a great read and although I have heard some people say that they felt  it was hard to get started reading, once you get into it you’ll really enjoy it.  I especially loved when she was in Italy talking about all of the food!  It made me want to eat a big bowl of pasta with the book in my lap.  If you want something light and enjoy Julia as much as I do, I would say just go and see it.  It wasn’t terrible but definitely not the best movie I’ve ever seen.
Have you read the book?  Did you see the movie?  Feel free to leave me your input! :D
